A local orthodontist launched a scholarship program for youths in need of braces.

Brigitte Marrero-Guempel gazed at a photo that was taken at her kindergarten graduation, the last day she flashed a wide smile for the camera.

Back then, her teeth weren’t as jagged and the kids weren’t as mean.

When she was in elementary school, her adult teeth grew in, jutting out crooked. The teeth crisscrossed — both the upper and lower sets — preventing her from eating certain foods and expressing certain words. She became the butt of jokes.

“You know how kids could be,” she said. “That was just one more thing to deal with.”

So in public she stopped smiling — for years — resorting to what she calls a Mona Lisa pose on special occasions and reserving a toothy grin for the day her mother could afford to buy her braces, a cost that averages between $4,000 and $7,000.

Now, at 16 and on the eve of what she expects to be her most memorable Christmas, the Parkland High School sophomore can’t stop smiling.
